Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail, also called the “LOST” is a popular trail in southern Florida. The trail itself meanders around the edges of Lake Okeechobee, the largest freshwater lake in Florida.
Enjoy several outdoor activities along the trail like hiking and biking. The scenic views of the lake and the surrounding natural landscapes draw quite a crowd. Considered a multi-use path, the trail is 109 miles long and part of the 1,000-mile Florida National Scenic Trail from Miami to Pensacola.
Originally built for flood control, this trail was eventually adapted for more recreational purposes. More recent renovations and construction projects enhanced the trail and made it more accessible and safe for hikers and cyclists. Over half of the trail is paved and eight feet wide.
Those traveling that path can not only view the lake but also the variety of natural landscapes like wetlands, cypress swamps, and grassy prairies. With these differing Okeechobee ecosystems comes a plethora of wildlife like alligators, birds, and plenty of fish. Birdwatchers also spend time here for the species of migratory birds that stop at the lake on their journey north or south.
There are campgrounds and small parks all along the trail that provide some restrooms, picnic areas, and designated camping sites for those who want to spend several days on the trail.
Be aware that the trail is subject to flooding during the rainy season. Make sure to check on trail conditions before heading out to explore. Algae blooms and other water quality issues can be harmful to sensitive populations.
As with many parks, well-behaved dogs are welcome. All dogs must be on a six-foot or shorter, handheld leash.
That depends. There are 65 miles of pavement and 45 miles of shell rock or grass track. How long it would take depends on your desired speed and whether you plan on biking the entire trail or only the paved sections. Some visitors will bike and stay at the established campground over three days and others decide to push themselves and bike the entire trail in one day.
